My Most Valuable Possession

The most valuable possession I have is my first ever trophy. It was the summer of 2007, and I was in Japan participating in my first international competition. There were people from all over the world from the U.S to Singapore. To be completely honest, I didn’t know that the competition was a big deal until I got back from the trip. But I remember very clearly, that those 3 days of competition were the best experiences I ever had. For my very first competition, I competed in the hardest group in my age category. Surprisingly, I earned the Gold award with a couple of other students. Although this competition rewards everyone who participates, winning first place is an achievement that you have to work for, and something that you can be very proud of. This was meaningful for me because it set up my future path for abacus. If my mother never entered me in this competition, I never would be the person I am now. After this competition, I entered in at least one every year until high school. Some competitions are different, some are difficult, and some were held in the U.S, but the experience was what gave me this feeling.

I wasn’t too fond on that idea, but I joined anyways. I wasn’t as involved as others were, but I made new friends. Soon enough, I got more and more involved in homecoming and other school activities. My brother didn’t just encourage me in school events, he was pretty much my cheerleader and mentor in things that weren’t academic. Whenever I had down moments or struggled with something, I would always ask him for advice. Even when I feel like I was bothering him, he still helped me. Other than my best friends, he was th...
